The nerd cute

One question before we start. Does anyone know what the geeky, strictly non-gay equivalent of "cute" should be? Well I don't, but it would sure come in handy right now. Here's why.

Just yesterday I received a package from my good long-time friend Lex Mortis from the Netherlands. He was getting rid of hardware from his old PC and was kind enough to send me some of the items, since sadly they turned out to be slightly better than the stuff I have. (Yes, I know, I desperately need an upgrade. I'm holding out till DX10 is a must though.) So anyway, the hardware--a Radeon 9800 (or 9600; opinions differ, hehe) video card, a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 sound card and a BenQ DVD burner--came with little stickers I wasn't expecting. Here they are.

Well this made me chuckle, so thanks, man! Also, I've realized how absolutely hermetic nerdy humor is. Anyone brave enough to analize this and explain to a lay person why exactly it's supposed to be funny? I'll pass.

The sad fate, is it?

So it seems I can't escape my fate, eh? Do I hate myself more just for not updating or for thus making this blog another one of the countless half-a-dozen-notes-before-it's-all-over blogs. Oh well.

Actually I can sort of understand why I kept silent for most of November: I was way too much excited about counting days before the European Wii launch. But then came December 8, the big stress-filled day, which consisted mostly of me obsessing on whether or not I will manage to get one (the pre-order didn't work out, how else). I only snatched it at around 8 p.m. (which on that day felt like waaaay later even) and... played ever since. Obviously a reason to update more often, right? Apparently wrong. Even I don't understand me.

So anyway, I don't think there is a point in me saying how much I enjoy my Wii. That's pretty much understood, right? Everybody loves their Wii by now, so it's enough for me to raise a finger and go, "Yeah, me too." Obviously. Funny thing however: for over a month now I practically haven't played on my PC. Not a single time. And it's not even that I'm all that glued to the Wii -- I can't be since it's stationed in the living room and the living room is out of my reach much of the time, so to speak. But when the Wii is unavailable, I play the DS, quite a lot even. But somehow not the PC. I really don't know what's wrong with me -- I really don't hate PC gaming all of a sudden, trust me.

Ok, let's see how long I can keep it going this time. Not that I think there are real live people reading this... Or are there?

Let me say this up front

Right then. It's finally happened and I'm now writing this blog. Granted, it's not like I'm losing my blogging virginity in here, but still, a new step is a new step. So, let the writing to a non-existent reader commence!

Who am I and what's up with the blog name and everything? For starters, yes, I do take pride in being a geek, and that is I've been feeling the urge to start writing something like this for some time now. However, unlike most regular, full-fledged geeks I know: I have no background in computer science -- or math, physics, engineering and whatnot -- I don't work nowhere near the IT sector, I've last written any computer code about ten years ago... oh, and I pretty much suck at video games, even though gaming takes up quite a big portion of my spare time. So instead, I studied at the Department of English Studies, I majored in linguistics, and I work as a translator and as a teacher of English in a language school here in Warsaw. See? Not very geeky at all. What more can I say then? I'm a class B geek at best.

The point of the blog? The basic plan is to post my everyday thoughts on what I do, what I come across online, what I play, what movies and TV I see, and so on, and so on. Why should you care about what I think? Oh, you shouldn't! It would be something to tell my grandchildren about if you did. Regardless, it just might be a fun read perhaps. Sounds like a plan?
